Problem: The customer needed to present thin steel blades down an assembly line in a specific orientation. However, the parts were essentially symmetrical, with the exception of a small notch which needed to be presented on the right side. With no real differences in the parts other than this notch, feeding them to an assembly mechanism with 100% accuracy was a challenge.
Solution: Fortville designed a vibratory feeder bowl system that used a vision system to check for correct orientation. The iVu Plus Integrated TG Gen2 camera was programmed to detect the notch as the parts were moving towards a horizontal track. Parts that were mis-oriented were moved back into the feeder bowl and re-circulated. By using a vision system, the customer has the flexibility to changeover to another part in minutes. The camera can be programmed for subtle internal differences in the parts and production can resume.
